OCM Targeting One Medal For Badminton At Junior Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is targeting at least one medal for the national junior badminton squad at the Junior Olympics in Singapore from Aug 14 to 26.

OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the target was made based on the potentials shown by the junior squad in several championships at the national level previously.

"However, it is too early for us to name the shuttler who has the potential to win the medal as the selection for the badminton events has yet to be made by the main body for the sport," he said when contacted by Bernama, here Friday.

Sieh said so far the OCM had only received confirmation for the yachting team. However, for other events such as badminton, swimming, shooting, diving, the confirmation will be received soon.

He said that host Singapore had specified that each country could only send 70 athletes because the Junior Olympics was being held for the first time.

"As such, although Singapore is near, we cannot send as many athletes as we like," he said.

The Junior Olympics will offer 26 events including aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, fencing, football, equestrian, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, shooting, weightlifting and cycling.

Kukuh reputasi hadapi Sukan Komanwel, Asia

Sheikh Ahmad 'buka peluang' Malaysia

Vietnam Joins UAE And Malaysia To Bid For 2019 Asiad

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia faces stiff competition to host the 2019 Asian Games as the region's emerging economic powerhouse Vietnam is set to bid for the Asiad as well.

News of the challenge came on the day Malaysia lost its bid to host the 2013 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Congress to Argentine capital Buenos Aires.

The Vietnam News Agency reported that the Vietnam Olympic Committee had proposed that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism get the government's permission to host the 2019 Asian Games.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Danh Thai was quoted as saying that the sports sector should invest in selected sports, especially sports that featured in the Olympic Games.

KL Loses Bid To Host 2013 IOC Meeting

VANCOUVER (CANADA), Feb 11 (Bernama) - Kuala Lumpur has lost to Buenos Aires in its bid to host the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in 2013 which will pick the host of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Kuala Lumpur received only 31 votes compared to 58 garnered by the Argentine capital city. Ninety-two of the 115 members of the IOC attended the 122nd IOC meeting here on Wednesday. Two members abstained while one vote was spoilt.

Besides selecting the host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics, the 2013 meeting will also appoint a new IOC president to succeed Jacques Rogge whose term of office ends in 2013.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar described the voting as fair, considering that after having selected Nanjing in China as the host of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, the IOC wanted another region in the world to host its 2013 meeting.

"Of course, I am disappointed (with the decision) but I feel Malaysia had made a good bid. Our presentation was the best we could have delivered," he said.

Sokongan PM kuatkan bidaan kita untuk anjur Sukan Asia 2019

KUALA LUMPUR - Klip video sokongan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak merupakan antara 'senjata" yang dibawa oleh rombongan Malaysia pada Kongres Jawatankuasa Olimpik Antarabangsa (IOC) di Vancouver, Kanada dalam usaha Kuala Lumpur untuk memenangi penganjuran Kongres IOC 2013 dan Sukan Asia 2019.

Ketua Pengarah Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) Datuk Zolkples Embong, berkata rombongan Malaysia, yang diketuai oleh Menteri Belia dan Sukan Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, akan membentangkan bidaan semasa Sesi IOC ke-122 esok, sebelum 115 anggota badan dunia itu mengundi.

PM's Support Strengthens Malaysia's Bid For 2013 IOC Congress

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- A video clip containing a message from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be among Malaysia's "secret" weapons in its bid to host the 2013 International Olympic Council (IOC) Congress.

National Sports Council (NSC) Director-General Datuk Zolkples Embong said Malaysia's delegation, headed by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, would make a representation at the 122nd IOC Session in Vancouver, Canada on Wednesday prior to the voting by IOC's 115 members

"Malaysia is given 20 minutes to make the representation on its bid to host the 2013 IOC Congress in Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur's competitor is Buenos Aires city (Argentina)," he told Bernama here Monday.

Apart from Zolkples and Ahmad Shabery, others in the Malaysian delegation are Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar, OCM vice-president Low Beng Choo and OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi.

Zolkples said Malaysia's representation would start with Tunku Imran introducing Malaysia's bid, including on the venue and the country's capabilities in hosting the event, followed by Ahmad Shabery who would touch on on the issue of budget, security and the government's support to the bid.

"The minister is making the presentation on behalf of the government in which the prime minister's video clip will be shown. The government's support is crucial in convincing IOC members on the strength of KL's bid," he said.

Zolkples said the 2013 IOC Congress would decide the host for the 2020 Olympic Games as well as appoint a new president replacing Jacques Rogge whose term would expire by then.

"If Malaysia succeed in the bid to host the congress, all eyes will be on Kuala Lumpur," he said, addding that it would also strengthen the country's bid for the 2019 Asian Games.

He also said that the bid for the IOC event as well as the 2019 Asian Games received full support from the cabinet.

Malaysia lost to Qatar in its bid to host the 2006 Asian Games and did not bid for the 2010 Asian Games, citing the high cost in hosting the event.

China will host the 2010 Asian Games in Gaungzhou while South Korea will host the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.
